Caring for Your KALU Cup
A few simple habits keep your cup performing well and looking its best.
Three points to know
Cleaning routine
First use
Wash before first use. Warm water, mild soap.
Everyday
Hand wash with warm water and mild dish soap. Rinse well. Air dry with the lid off and both lid pieces separated. Trapped moisture is the main cause of mold and odor, so let everything dry fully before storing.
Weekly
Wash the silicone ring separately once a week, along with the groove it sits in. Trapped moisture in this area can lead to mold and odor if the ring is not cleaned regularly.
To clean: remove the ring from its groove, wash with warm water and mild soap, dry completely before reassembling. Check the ring sits flush all the way around, and that both lid pieces are screwed together tightly.
The ring is clear silicone and may darken slightly with use, particularly from coffee or tea. This is a natural property of silicone and does not affect the seal or performance.
What to avoid
Microwave
Do not microwave. The body is stainless steel, and metal in a microwave is a safety hazard.
Dishwasher
Hand wash is recommended for best results. The cup can go in the dishwasher, but high heat and strong detergents vary by cycle and can affect the exterior finish over time.
Freezer
Do not freeze. The insulation is not designed for freezer temperatures.
Other things to avoid
Abrasive sponges and harsh cleaning products.
Getting to know your lid
The lid is two parts that twist together, designed to come apart for cleaning.
- To separate: hold the base steady and twist the top piece until it releases.
- To reassemble: line up the two pieces and twist until fully screwed on, no gaps.
A loose lid, a button left open, or a silicone ring that is not seated properly are the most common causes of leaks. The checklist below covers all three.
The leak-proof promise
Follow these steps and your KALU Cup is 100% leak-proof. Four checks before you head out:
- Close the button lid fully. One click to open, one click to seal.
- Check the silicone ring sits flush all the way around.
- Check both lid pieces are screwed on tight.
- If the drink is hot, leave the lid open a few seconds before sealing, to let the steam escape.
Before it goes in your bag, tip it upside down for a few seconds. No drips means it is sealed properly.
-
Storage
Store with the lid off to allow airflow. Keep out of direct sunlight for extended periods.
